Penny had dreamed of living in an artist-focused cohousing community, but instead, she got us: an intergenerational group with a wide range of interests, not necessarily artistic. Lucky for us, Penny brought her creative spirit anyway.
During the early months of the pandemic, when we were all stuck at home, Penny had an idea: she invited neighbors to create some art. She even delivered paper to each of our porches and supplied materials we could use. And just like that, the first Nevada City Cohousing Art Exhibition was born.
Since then, several times a year, Penny prompts us again, offering a theme, fresh paper, and her trademark patience and encouragement, nudging just enough of us to create another exhibit.
This spring’s exhibit centered on the theme of “home,” a topic open to wide and personal interpretation. Penny mounted and displayed each piece, transforming our common house into a gallery once again. With wine, snacks, and even live music, we gathered to admire the art and share a few words about our creations. In doing so, we learned a little more about one another, and ended the evening with beautiful, hyper-local art to brighten our shared space for the season ahead.
